Linear dispersion: 60 mm
The Spectroscope is only instrument widely available for separating natural-color diamonds from those that have obtained their color by irradiation or heating. It is also particulary useful for distinguishing natural-color green jadeite jade from dyed, some varieties of natural sapphire (especially blue) from synthetic and look-alikes. As the Spectroscope is for examining which parts of white light are absorbed by a gemstone. Materials can absorb parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and when the absorbed parts fall within the visible range, that absorbed part will influence the color of the material. When a gemstone is observed with a spectroscope, the absorbed parts show as dark lines and/or bands in the spectroscope image.
